Over 29 years counselling experience
When you attend counselling at my practice, one of the things I aim to achieve is to create a safe environment where you can feel supported and comfortable enough to explore whichever issue or issues you wish to. For some, the pace of this can be a concern and so an important focus I have is to try to work at your pace (rather than mine). Sometimes this means helping you to "put the accelerator down" and get into processing issues effectively, but at other times it means helping you to "put on the brakes" and make sure you feel safe enough and in control before moving forward. I liken this to teaching someone how to drive a car where it is important to teach them how to stop the car before teaching them how to make it move. Safety is an important priority.
I believe an important perspective about counselling is that my role is to empower you to deal with what you want to explore and deal with. A strong listening focus is fundamental to this. In addition, I have a significant leaning towards working from educational and practical perspectives e.g. teaching people about healthy & unhealthy dynamics in relationships, about conflict resolution and how emotions function, about assertiveness & boundary setting skills and about physiology to name but a few areas.
I am eclectic in my approach blending therapeutic approaches such as Person-Centred Therapy, Cognitive(-Behavioural) Therapy (including Rational-Emotive Therapy), Transactional Analysis and Psychodynamic Therapy. This is not an exhaustive list as I do use elements of other therapies, too but this gives an indication of some of the major approaches I use.
